Ellipticals KILL my knees… what can I do?

Posted by Filed Under Sports & Fitness Treadmills with 2 Comments

I have patellafemoral syndrome and am currently undergoing physical therapy (which doesn’t seem to be doing much at all and it’s been about 5-6 weeks, though I am adamently doing my exercises…) I know this takes time, but I haven’t been to the gym in 2 months!

The elliptical absolutely KILLS my knees, but running doesn’t hurt (according to my PT, that’s very strange and backwards) However, my PT guesses that my knee pain came from my running without building up my quad muscles.

What can I do to work out? Can I run if it doesn’t hurt me at all? I want to swim, but I’m terrible at it and I can hardly do half a lap without almost dying. Also, does anyone have any specific exercises that they could recommend that REALLY work for this condition?

do all ellipticals prevent impact on the body? Even low-end ones?

We are thinking about purchursing an elliptical or treadmill. But the gym said that the treadmill is bad for your health and impacts your knees etc.

Does this apply to all ellipticals?
Does it apply to low-end ones (approx. 500$)

    What is your opinion?
    Low-end elliptical vs. medium-end treadmill.

I know they say they’re low impact but can they still damage the joints since they cant mimic ur normal body movement when running?

I’m trying to talk my husband into buying a treadmill. We have kids and I can’t go walking around the neighborhood all the time. I need to be home. He said he doesn’t want one cause they cause problems with your knees. I don’t understand how that could be.

Looking for home cardio without doing in the knees, so was trying to get a treadmill alternative.

Is there an advantage to stair vs elliptical for a cardio workout?

Would also appreciate advice on which companies build decent machines, or specific
      machines you would suggest ( <00 )

I love the treadmill but I have been told that it can damage your knees significantly due to the high impact. Is this true? If it is, is there anyway you can lessen the impact while still using it?

A while back I hurt my knee, possibly at the gym (I’m not sure). It healed a while ago, but I don’t want it to happen again. Which is least hard on your knees, ellipticals, treadmills, or exercycle (aka exercise bikes)?
